The Santa Ana Police Department maintains a Type II jail for both men and women arrested in Santa Ana. This jail is one of the newest and most advanced Direct Supervision Jails, utilizing the latest technology in housing arrestees. While there are several hundred beds available, almost all are dedicated under contract to the Federal Government and not used for local arrestees. If they are arrested on a new case for something that just occurred, called an “open” charge or a “street address,” a warrant issued out of the court in Santa Ana, or a warrant was another court, most arrestees are taken after booking to the Orange County Jail. They are referred to as a “Fast Book” which means they will not be held at this jail, but will be moved through an underground tunnel to the Orange County Jail. The “Fast Book” process can be anything but quick. Santa Ana prefers to wait until they have a group of inmates to escort to the Orange County Jail. Sometimes it can be an hour or so, at other times it can be many hours. And once they arrive at the Orange County Jail, they need to start the booking process there. Often we are able to bail them from the Santa Ana Police Department while they are awaiting movement to the Orange County Jail, but there are no guarantees. It is worth mentioning that Santa Ana’s Jail also does screening through ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to determine the legal status of arrestees and this could prevent someone from being bailed out.
Processing Time: From when someone arrives and starts the booking process, it is fairly quick, taking an hour or two before they will be available to be bailed out, if they are wnot immediately moved to the Orange County Jail.
Once a bail bond is deposited for release, they will usually be out in less than 30 minutes.
