Has Someone Been Arrested in Orange County?
If arrested in Orange County, usually the individual goes to the Orange County Jail in Santa Ana. Operated, by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the IRC (also known as “The Main”) provides custody services for the Sheriff’s Department and many police departments in Orange County. Also, if someone is arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Orange County, they will be brought directly here.
In addition to the “Main” Jail, many police departments maintain temporary holding facilities around the county. At these facilities, people can be held for a day or two awaiting their first court appearance.
There are other reasons someone may be go to the Orange County Jail. These would include a warrant from a non-local court, medical conditions or some jails do not have facilities to hold both women and men, so it is usually the women who get moved to the Orange County Jail.
Many people still believe you get “one phone call” when arrested. California Penal Code Section 851.5 makes it clear that a defendant is entitled to make at least 3 completed calls within 3 hours of being arrested. Local calls (defined as no further than phone company “message units”) can be made for free. Non-local calls need to be placed collect. Once arrested, individuals do not have access to their cell phones, PDA’s or address books so they will need to call phone numbers they can remember. Also, wireless phones are not able to accept collect calls, so calls from the jail usually need to be made to a “land line” phone. Be aware that many jails use special collect calling phone companies that will charge you up to $15.00 for saying “Yes, I’ll accept the charges.”
TIP:If you are concerned about missing someone’s call from the jail because it has to be made collect and you may not be home, try putting the message “Operator, we accept all collect calls” On the outgoing message of your answering machine. That way, if you are not home, a detailed message can be left for you by the arrestee to hear when you return. Remember though, you’re paying for that call!.
